The Hohe Tauern National Park enjoys special protection from unwanted human intervention and environmental pollution. Due to this shielding and guarding, the area in the north of East Tyrol is a Noah’s Ark for thousands of animal and plant species that thrive particularly well under the protected conditions. But it is not only animal and plant species that feel particularly at home in the Hohe Tauern National Park.
On guided tours with the national park ranger you get the best insight into this fascinating wilderness in the unique ecosystem.
National Park highlight: The 22-metre-high wildlife observation tower, which opened in 2020, offers three levels for the perfect view of the natural jewels in the rear Defereggental.
The beautiful Dolomite town scores points especially in summer with its Mediterranean flair. It is worth exploring Lienz and its eventful past on a guided city tour along the old city walls and past numerous monuments and sights. But Lienz and the region can not only be discovered, but also tasted. On weekends, the traditional city market is held in the upper old town. Culinary delicacies from all over East Tyrol are offered here. A wide variety of products from regional manufacturers can also be purchased there.
Our tip: with the Locandy app you can explore the sunny city of Lienz in a playful way.
The starting point is the car park at the Matreier Tauernhaus in the direction of the Felbertauern Tunnel. The 2.2 km leisurely and family-friendly hike through a fascinating natural landscape starts from the car park. Great place to stop for a break at the Berghaus Außergschlöß. The hut is a two-time overall winner of the Austria-wide hut election “Mei liabste Hütt´n”. Great view of the Venediger Group. Great information about the region can be obtained from the adjacent viewing platform.
