What's on offer ranges from unique natural spectacles, museums and picturesque towns, action-packed outdoor activities to lively bathing fun. Matrei is situated directly on the main southbound route. You can reach many destinations within 30 to 60 minutes by car from here.

Zedlacher Paradise nature trail

You will get an idea of what it might look like in the Garden of Eden just above Matrei. The Zedlacher Paradise radiates a golden glow especially during the autumn, when the large, up to 500-year-old larch population turns a golden yellow. A hike through the expansive network of trails gives nature lovers of all ages an insight into the wonderful world of trees and animals. Visitors are greeted by colossal wrought-iron animals created by the Matrei artist and ornamental blacksmith Erich Trost.

Kals Glocknerstrasse road

The emperor of the mountains up close! Experience the most impressive view of the Grossglockner in the picturesque Ködnitz Valley. The seven-kilometre toll road leads from Kals to the "Glocknerwinkel" car park. You can enjoy a magnificent view of the 3,798 m high summit of the Grossglockner from there. The Grossglockner Panorama Building has an exhibition and an educational path that inform visitors about the unique nature and Alpine history.

Umbal Falls natural monument in the Virgen Valley

The roaring masses of water make their way through the rocky massifs, rushing over steps, forming whirlpools and plunging into the valley. It is a very special natural spectacle when the glacier water of Lake Umbal merges to form the River Isel. The education path bearing the same name leads past seven stops along the waterfalls. You can observe the spectacle up close on several platforms in the gorges. The starting point for the educational path is the Ströden car park, which can be reached via the Prägraten am Grossvenediger municipality.

Grossvenediger Prägraten climbing park

The "Grossvenediger Adventures" climbing park at the starting point of the Umbal Falls promises pure adventures. With over 700 Flying Fox routes, a 20-metre long giant swing and 100 stages with varying degrees of difficulty, the whole family will experience an unforgettable day here.

Isel: white water paradise for outdoor fans

The Isel is the last free-flowing glacier river in the Alps. Rafting fans and kayakers will adore this white water paradise and the breathtaking primeval landscape. Outdoor enthusiasts will feel right at home in the Adventure-Park Osttirol in Ainet, south of Matrei. You will experience pure nature during wild romantic river hikes, canyoning with waterfall diving, rafting, survival training and biking.


Sightseeing in East Tyrol's capital Lienz

The picturesque town of Lienz in the heart of East Tyrol radiates Mediterranean flair with idyllic street cafés and small boutiques. The Bruck Castle landmark rises high above the city. The castle from the 13th century is home to the museum of the city of Lienz with works by the internationally renowned painter Albin Egger-Lienz. Other highlights include the Knights' Hall with its originally decorated Romanesque beamed ceiling, the castle chapel with Gothic frescoes and the keep with its grandiose views.


Bathing fun and wellness at the Dolomitenbad Lienz

The Dolomitenbad Lienz is home to an indoor pool, outdoor pool and wellness refuge. You can enjoy pleasant temperatures here on hot summer days under shady trees and with a view of the mountains. The sauna area with its unique architecture bringing nature inside is a sensual oasis of well-being. The swimming complex features children's, multi-purpose and indoor sports pools as well as several outdoor swimming pools with slides and a huge 30,000-m2 lounging area.


Lake Tristach

Lake Tristach with its crystal-clear water nestles idyllically into the landscape above Lienz. Surrounded by mighty coniferous forests and a romantic walking path, you will enjoy a very special bathing experience in the forest lake. The walking path leads to the "Alter Lake" natural monument and biotope. You have to pay for the parking at Lake Tristach.


Assling adventure world and wildlife park

The Assling adventure world with its wildlife park, children's playground and Alpine coaster is a popular summer excursion destination for families. You can observe deer, lynxes, raccoons, owls or ibexes on a tour of the area. This is followed by a fast-paced ride on the Alpine coaster and a leisurely refreshment stop at the "Bärenwirt" restaurant.
